Health risks associated with snoring

Snoring is a common condition that can affect anyone, although it occurs more frequently in men and people who are overweight. Snoring has a tendency to worsen with age. Occasional snoring is usually
not very serious and is mostly a nuisance for your bed partner.

However, if you are a habitual snorer, you not only disrupt the sleep patterns of those close to you, but you also impair your own sleep quality. Medical assistance is often needed for habitual snorers (and their loved ones) to get a good night's sleep.

Habitual snorers can be at risk for serious health problems, including obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea creates several problems, including:
Long interruptions of breathing: Snoring cause partial or total obstruction or blockage of the airway.

Sleep apnea causes frequent waking from sleep, even though you may not realize it.

Light sleeping: People with obstructive sleep apnea sleep lightly to try to keep their throat muscles tense enough to maintain airflow.

Strain on the heart: Prolonged suffering from obstructive sleep apnea often results in higher blood pressure and may cause enlargement of the heart, with higher risks of heart attack and stroke.

Poor night's sleep: This leads to drowsiness during the day and can interfere with your quality of life.

Expert warn that "Second hand clothes cause candidiasis, hepatitis".

A medical expert, Dr Elizabeth Uzorji, has said that users of second hand clothes risk contracting candidiasis and hepatitis A, B and C. Uzorji in Jos on Tuesday said that such diseases were air borne
and could be contracted easily through the constant use of second hand clothes.

"Those that patronises second clothes do not have the slightest idea of who the first user was".
"Those selling the wares also do not take their time to wash these clothes very well before marketing them".
"So the lack of adequate information about the negative effects of these second hand clothes among our people has placed users at high risk and a major cause of concern to public health experts," she said.
The medical expert decried the situation where some women buy inner wears from the second hand clothes dealers and declared that such women were at the risk of contracting vaginal infections.
She advised the people to ensure that the items were washed before being used; stressing that such step would go a long way in reducing the chances of such infections.
Uzorji specifically advised that such second hand clothes be washed with hot water and detergent before being used so as to reduce the chances of any infection. (NAN)

Funke Akindele Opens Up On Pregnancy

Yoruba star actress and Glo Ambassador, Funke Akindele, has opened up on reports and rumours about her pregnancy.
A close family source of the actress told Entertainment Café that Akindele was amused reading a story in the current edition of a Lagos-based soft sell magazine suggesting that she suffered a miscarriage and her movie career has nose-dived.
“Funke is not pregnant yet. She has chosen to be silent on the true state of her condition because in Yoruba culture, it is more of a taboo for a married woman to publicly denounce or confirm if she’s pregnant or not.
“This is a private affair and that’s why she was so amused and even surprised about the story claiming that she lost her pregnancy,” the source told Entertainment Café in a telephone chat.
The source added that when the initial story with a picture of a supposed baby bump hit the internet and that Akindele was in her first trimester, she silently claimed it since that is her wish after a grand wedding in May.
The rumour continued to fester in September after another soft sell magazinepublished pictures of Akindele at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards held in the United States.
When the 37-year old actress strolled into the premises of Eko Hotel And Suites, venue of The Headies, on 20 October, all eyes were on her.
Funke, who wore a black silk pair of trousers and high heeled shoes, was seen strolling around with her friends.
But when Entertainment Café walked up to her to inquire about her rumoured pregnancy, the actress’ mien tightened into a scowl.
But the persistence of our correspondent forced a stern remark as she walked off muttering: “What do you want to hear? Thought you are a Yoruba man?” PM News

Americans Decides

As Americans decides who governs them in the next four years, at least 120 million Americans are expected to vote on giving Obama a second term or replacing him with Romney. Their decision will set the country's course for four years on spending, taxes, healthcare and foreign policy challenges like the rise of China and Iran's nuclear ambitions.
National opinion polls show Obama and Romney in a virtual dead heat, although the Democratic incumbent has a slight advantage in several vital swing states - most notably Ohio - that could give him the 270 electoral votes he needs to win.
Romney, the multimillionaire former head of a private equity fund, would be the first Mormon president and one of the wealthiest Americans to occupy the White House. Obama, the first black president, is vying to be the first Democrat to win a second term since Bill Clinton in 1996.
Fueled by record spending on negative ads, the battle between the two men was focused primarily on the lagging economic recovery and persistent high unemployment, but at times it turned personal.
Polls will begin to close in Indiana and Kentucky at 6 p.m. ESTon Tuesday, with voting ending across the country over the next six hours.
The first results, by tradition, were tallied in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, New Hampshire, shortly after midnight . Obama and Romney each received five votes in Dixville Notch. In Hart's Location, Obama got 23 votes to 9 votes for Romney and two votes for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.
The close presidential race raises fears of a disputed outcome similar to the 2000 election, which was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Both campaigns have assembled legal teams to deal with possible voting problems, challenges or recounts.
The balance of power in the U.S. Congress will also be at stake in Senate and House of Representatives races that could impact the outcome of "fiscal cliff" negotiations on spending cuts and tax increases, which kick in at the end of the year unless a deal is reached.
Obama's Democrats are now expected to narrowly hold their Senate majority, while Romney's Republicans are favored to retain House control.
Despite the weak economy, Obama appeared in September to be cruising to a relatively easy win after a strong party convention and a series of stumbles by Romney, including a secretly recorded video showing the Republican writing off 47 percent of the electorate as government-dependent victims.
But Romney rebounded in the first debate on October 3 in Denver, where his sure-footed criticism of the president and Obama's listless response started a slow rise for Romney in polls. Obama seemed to regain his footing in recent days at the head of federal relief efforts for victims of the storm Sandy.
The presidential contest is now likely to be determined by voter turnout - specifically, what combination of Republicans, Democrats, white, minority, young, old and independent voters shows up at polling stations.
Obama and Romney raced through seven battleground states on the final day of campaigning to hammer home their final themes, urge supporters to get to the polls and woo the last remaining undecided voters. By John Whitesides

Why Do Post Graduate Degree Holders Want To Become Drivers? 6 PhD, 704 Masters and over 8,460 Bachelor degree holders apply for Driver Jobs at Dangote Group

Recently, Dangote Group announced that it received a staggering 13,000 applications from graduates for employment as truck drivers. Of the 13,000 applications received for the Graduate Executive Truck Driver positions, there were 6 Ph.D, 704 Masters and over 8,460 Bachelor degree holders.
Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said that the company only needed 100 drivers, but received the overwhelming applications.
Vanguard reports that at a mentorship meeting of the World Bank Youth Forum recently, Mr Dangote said that most of the applicants were from reputable universities and had the needed quality.
“All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions which is satisfactory; and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent.
“Despite the fact that the drivers get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, the arrangement is that they will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300,000 kilometres, which is about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano and a hard working driver can complete in two years, while lazy ones can take maximum of four years.”
When Dangote Group first made the announcement for graduate drivers, there were speculations that the job came with a juicy monthly salary of N500,000. Whether this is true or not, it didn’t change the fact that the job position was still for a truck driver and I didn’t think so many people would be interested in it. But I was so wrong. 8,460 Bachelor degree holders, 704 Masters Degree holders and 6 PhD holders is definitely an overwhelming amount.
The general idea is that after obtaining a first degree, Masters degree or a PhD, one’s goal in life would be bigger than becoming a truck driver. But this large amount of applications has proven that theory wrong. So then, the question is this: is the high number of applications due to the high unemployment rate in the country or is it that some people just don’t know what to do with their degrees? Why do you think graduates, Masters degree and PhD holders want to become drivers?
